Bye Lady O Lena

Late last week Lady's hind legs gave out on her and she couldn't get back up. We tried to help her and she just fell. I prepared myself all weekend to have her put down. Due to weather conditions and the fact that I can not emotionally handle putting my animals down Gerald done it today. I kissed her good-bye this morning before I went to work. She was in the stall, so she was put down in there. She was dry and warm. She couldn't even prop herself up to eat and drink. I had to hold her head up to drink and I dumped her food on the stall mat and she ate it laying down. Her mind was so alert and she was still eating and drinking, her body failed her. I think the winter was just too hard on her. It broke my heart watching her try to get up. She would just look at me as if she was just wanting to go to sleep and not wake up. She didn't seem to be in pain, she just couldn't get her back legs to work. I cried when I saw the empty stall, It would of hurt more seeing her struggle one more day. My boyfriend still has her colt, Cash to remind us of her. We know someone with one of her daughters, Gerald has been trying to lease her to breed to Cat. Lady held a special place in my heart, I would take her food and water to her, she didn't have to come get it. She would see me coming with it and nicker. She was 25 years old.

That is so sad. I know you will miss her terribly. It sounds like you did the only thing you could. You will never forget her,and your memories will keep her alive in your heart, and in time you will start to feel better. My sympathies.

Thank you all! She declined so quickly, I thought she would be here at least for the summer. She left her best friend Holly to foal on her own. They were together for over 10 years. I had them in the broadmare stall together until I realized Lady was failing. Cash is such a nice colt, a real gift.

I want to thank everyone again for the kind words and support. Having to make the decison to end the life of a beautiful horse like Lady is hard. You always wonder if you did the right thing. In her way she made it a little easier on me. It is hard to explain the way she looked at me when I walked in the stall except that she seemed to be thinking "why am I still here?" If you are close to your horse, you will know when it is time. It doesn't make it any easier.
