Another Friend Lost

I recently had to put down Lady Olena, this past weekend her friend Holly was laid to rest right next to her. She aborted her foal 2 weeks before she was due, we buried them together. It had come out breech and Holly red bagged. Even if I had been there it was probably already dead. We had wanted to put her down in the fall, she was in foal so we waited. The foal was so beautiful. It was a very sad day.

I am saddened by your loss. It's always hard to lose one, but losing the foal too is heartbreaking. I'm on foal watch right now, a first foal. Maybe people think I'm crazy, but I camp out in the next stall to my mare, so that I can hear her and be there when she foals. One can never be too careful with our precious creatures.

So Sorry to hear of your double loss there Jess. At least they are together, with your other mare.

Be sure to keep them alive in your heart, so they can be with you always.

Thank's to everyone. I looked out the window Saturday morning and saw the foal still in the sack. Only 2 weeks away. I thank my boyfriend for handling everything, I would be lost without him. I said my goodbye to Holly and he sent me to the store. I came home and she was gone. I handle it much better if I don't see them dead. That way I remember them alive.

Jess I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so hard to lose a horse, but to lose her foal as well. My condolances.

Oh Jess, I am so sorry. It's so hard to lose a foal and then the mare as well. Even if you had planned on putting her down later, having the choice taken from you is the pits. I hope things turn around for you soon.

Shirley, I can understand the camping out. I was doing that with the one mare of mine and it finally got to me. I wasn't there for her and I lost both of them. I was only about 10 minutes too late. I tried to resuscitate the foal, and the mare damaged something in her spine trying to deliver a too large foal. She was 2or 3 weeks overdue. She died the next day. Holly was my friends horse, I have been caring for her for over 3 years. This year I'm only breeding one mare and my boyfriend has one. As much as I enjoy it the heartbreak is getting too hard to handle.
