Pissy Mares

These girls need to get layed! OMG! Especially Kola. This heat cycle has to be one of the worst I've seen. Still they could be more non compliant. Kola refused her Metamucil today. I added a little corn oil, hoping to disguise it and she said no way. So I'll have to get a bit more creative, maybe some apple sauce. Then it was an argument over the halter as I wanted their halters on because Jeremiah coming this morning to trim them. Misty was fine, but Kola was a turd! She is very irritated with Misty and me, but she eventually falls in line when I persist and don't go away. I will always win! On top of it all, which I don't think helps is the damned weather changes. It was so warm last week, then it stormed the weekend and now the temperature has dropped to the 30's and 40's. They will get their Innovator5 today and they'll get wormed as well. Then in about 3 weeks, they'll get their coggins drawn and a West Nile vac. I hope this heat cycle ends soon. Cheryl the cat now has a kitty cold and I have to clear her nose with a warm wet cloth several times a day. Kitty colds last 7 to 10 days apparently. So this week is starting all on a fine note. Steve and I came home from a trip to Janesville yesterday to find Mr. & Mrs. Mallard Duck in our yard. That tells you how much rain we've had recently. Stephen has gone fishing. I might just join him.

Oh man, hope she gets out of heat real quick!
I can say I am blessed with a mare that I do not even know if she is in-unless I lift her tail and check. She is the most even tempered mare I have seen.
Poor Kitty-hopefully he will be well soon!
We have had rain as well. But yesterday the temp dropped to the low 60s and we woke up this morning to low 40s and windy!

Kris, I've noticed so. I think the weather is complicating it. Misty is pretty much over it, but Kola just pissed.

Some mares can get pretty crabby when they are in heat and others you would never know by their attitude. Sorry you have a crabby one.

The weather is all over the place here too. It's making me crazy but at least it didn't rain for our horse show. That part was good.

Hi Miss Callie,
Hey, your post got me thinking... and I know this sounds bizarre, but if your mare keeps refusing the Metamucil, try mixing it with soy sauce. I'm not kidding. I had a tough case who wouldn't take his meds. Someone online suggested it, and I tell ya, it totally worked. The saltiness they love, and looking at your last post, that might be the way to go. They love their salt! I now keep a bottle of soy sauce in the tack room, which leads to all kinds of questions when people come over. But it worked for me!

Mikael, I think once the weather breaks and she gets through this heat cycle, she'll be ok. Even Jeremiah was amazed at how crabby she was while being trimmed. Unusual for Kola and Misty even bit my jacket during her trim.

Mikey, What a wonderful idea! I'll try that and let you know!

I can relate to the mares in heat. Bringing Remington home from the horse fair seemed to trigger our 4 girls.

We put up a strand of electric between the pens to keep them from trying any funny business.

LOL, Jessie, When I had my gelding, Dakota, he used to "breed" Misty all the time. It was ridiculous! She somehow didn't seem to mind. Hehehehe.....

Apparently, Kola couldn't stand the thought of grain just sitting in the feeder, so she finished it in the end. I win!

There is nothing worse than a crabby mare, we had a few boarders and all of their mares were witches when in heat. I am so lucky Dusty is not affected too much by heats, good luck with the girls. The weather here is miserable, rain and wind and it's depressing. Take your own advice and go fishing to get away from them for a while.

GHM, Yeah, it's unusual for them to be so crabby. Most times they are both pretty even tempered. Misty level headed and Kola goofy!

Oh and I forget to tell you about a procedure a friend of ours had done to his mare. The vet inserts a marble type ball into them and it makes them think they are bred. He said it normally stays in about 1-2 years. He said it worked great on her and she was so even tempered. I have not personally had any experience with this procedure, but I thought it would be worth mentioning so you could check it out.
