What Does Your Vet Offer?

Today I stopped in the Vet's office to pay my recent bill and found this pamphlet sitting on the counter. I'm a bit perturbed that I was unaware of this program until now. But that very well could have been my own fault as I often receive mail like this and just pitch it without reading it through. This is an offer for an Equine Wellness Program through the Elkhorn Vet Clinic in my area. So here it is in a nutshell.
You receive a...........
*Annual Medical Exam
*Annual Coggins Test
*One Dental Exam
*One Dental Level 1 with Sedation
*Annual Vaccinations
-Tetanus Toxoid
-Eastern & Western Encephalomyelitis
-West Nile
-Potomac Horse Fever
-Influenza (Spring & Fall)
-Rhinopnuemonitis (Spring & Fall)
*Nutrition and Weight Management Consult
-Body Condition Score
-One 15 Minute Consult
*Medical Record Sheet
*35% Discount on Additional Vaccinations
*35% Discount on Dewormers
This program is offered for $250 per horse per year January to January. You must pay for it in advance and you still get charged the call out fee, which for me is $40. I actually think this is a great deal. I will not do it this year as I've done most of my shots already and it won't pay to do this year, but I will start in January '09. Any funds still in the Wellness Account may be used as credit toward other things or services. I really like this program and if you add up each thing individually, especially the dental work and sedation, it seems like a pretty good deal to me. So does your vet offer anything like this?

Dunno, but as they say, 'Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'. (Sorry. Don't have a USA/Brit currency converter!).

Pony Girl,I was shocked to find this, but I think it's a great idea.

Dickiebo, On the conversion, your pound wins Big Time!

I have not heard of this either but will def check it out. With five to do all this stuff for it sure adds up.

Yes you are right the old rats are like the extensions that we have today. They were kind of gross but they worked and it was your own hair so I guess people didn't mind their own grossness! lol!

My vets just offer a clinic with everything rolled into one at a discount. For me it is not worth it to spend several hours standing in line with my horses and kids, though. I go for the ranch call to save myself the lost time. It's nice that you can get a discount package as a ranch call.

wow! now that is a HUGE bargain!!!!

my vet offers nothing remotely close and living in the heart of horse country, I would think any vets in my area would-but NO.

I am jealous..........

I have not heard of this program either! WEll have to check into it for next year! That defintely is a baragin, especially if you do not use all the money you can put it towards something else. What a great idea!

Midlife Mom, Even with just my two, it's a bargain. $500 for the year of wellness which we have to do anyway.

NuzMuz, Yeah, It wouldn't be worth it if I had to haul them in. Our ranch call is only $40.

BG, I'm glad you said that, cuz I was thinking it was too. If you think about the cost of having sedation and teeth float alone.

Kris, Yeah, It won't pay for to do it this year as I've already done most of it, so come January when I get my bonus from work, I'll just pay for it and start scheduling.

Lodi Vet up here offers a very similar program. Now that they have merged with Madison Equine I will have to see if it is still offered. You're right, it's a great program.

Callie said...

Kathy, I know Elkhorn is pretty tied up with Madison. At least I think it is.

These prices make it worth living in Wisconsin and not in New England! My vet has a wellness program, nowhere near as much offered, and way more expensive. Sounds like you should take advantage of this asap before they realize what a good deal it is and raise the price.

Ranchette, You're right, It is a great deal.

Victoria, I think the program stems from lack of bill payment and lack of care and more self care because of prices. They are the only vet with equine services that make ranch calls in this area. And for awhile I actually trailered my horses 45 minutes away because the price and care was better. Of course emergencies are a different thing and maybe they realized they needed to do something different. It took me alot to forgive them for asking me for a credit card before they would send out a vet for my severely colicked filly that ended up dying. It wasn't the vets per say, but the ownership and billing.

I don't know how I missed this post, but it's a good one. I'll check out my vets and if they don't have a plan I might just suggest one!

GHM, You go girl, I think it's a fabulous plan. It saves us and the horses.
