Let's Talk About Blogger Etiquette

Ok, I'm writing this post because recently I've received a couple of comments from the same person with an embedded link in the comment itself. I'm a firm believer in publishing all comments I receive even if it's a disagreement with my personal view. Of course, unless it was particularly venomous. I can thankfully say that I've never received a comment I didn't deem worthy of publishing, however, I find it rude to find an embedded link in the comment to direct people to their post. I appreciate drumming up visitors and such as it takes a long time and dedication to establish yourself out here and most of us post regularly and work hard to bring fun and interesting reading to our fellow bloggers, not to mention just to document our lives. We can access each others blogs by clicking on a name and following it to the person's profile which I have done many times and often visited new people I haven't visited before. Is it just me or do we all feel the same way? I personally would never dream of doing that to my fellow bloggers.

I never really thought about it either way Callie, but I do not embed links to my blog in comments I leave on other blogs. It just seemed.... well, like a waste of time. There is "self promotion" and then there is "Self" promotion. Big difference between the two if you ask me.

Posting a valid comment to the subject at hand, and making it intelligent will get you visits to your own blog.

By the way- kiss that Koal nose from me!

I think when I first started out, I put my URL (but not a link) in my comments, because I didn't know that people could just click on my name or pic and go to my profile. As soon as I realized that leaving my web address wasn't necessary, I stopped.

I won't publish embedded links because they usually are advertising something without my permission. I do feel annoyed when someone makes a general comment that suggests she didn't even read the post, and then sticks an embedded link in there. I figure mine is one of one hundred blogs that got that same comment that day.

Agreed, Mrs.Mom

I may have well done that too in the beginning, NuzMuz, for the same reason.

Oh, Mrs.Mom, I totally kissed those noses tonight!

Interesting, I have noticed it on a few blogs lately and wondered "what's up with that?"

I, like you, follow someone who I see commenting alot and then read their blog. If I feel inclined I comment.

Thanks, Kathy, I just thinks it's rude and I think that most of us do what we do.

I don't know if I've ever done this, but think I haven't. I guess it's rude but also a way to get people to visit your blog. I get these comments with embedded links and publish them anyway. If someone reads my comments and wants to visit their blog, I really don't care. I usually click on someones name when I want to visit their site. Some people may not know that embedding links is rude. I've never gotten venomous comments either, I guess not that many people read my blog and find it offensive. It's a challenging thing to keep a blog going and keep people interested, but we all try,so I guess it's individual how we feel about publishing a comment. Don't know if all this made any sense, I'm pretty tired right now.

GHM, You never have. I don't mind an embedded link to further info or to source a point, but directly to your post on the very same subject is a little different. It makes sense. :)

I have never done that and I have never had anyone do it to me, so I guess I don't really know. I always just asumed that if someone wanted to read my blog they could just click on my name and see my profile! But it is kinda like, PUSH THIS LINK NOW!! And that can seem kinda rude.
Sorry, I am new here! Love your blog! I will come back for more!!

I don't have a problem with a embedded links when they are pertinent. But then I guess there's a question about what that means. I don't publish them if they are really spam (which many are) but if they are legitimate bloggers with some sort of interest in the community, I have no problem.

But advertising links, spyware and other spammers. I see bunches of those. I hate them. I got a comment promoting buckaroo leather (which happens to be low end tack) and I didn't publish it either. I guess because I didn't want anyone to think I was endorsing that stuff. I guess we all have our own limits.

Can't say I've ever done it, and am not aware of many who do it on mine. (One notable exception!!)
It is probably more annoying to those who, like you, have a large 'following', than those like me who.....just have to be grateful for any morsel thrown to them.Link or no link.

Welcome Andrea! And Thank-you. I'll be visiting........

I agree MIkael, If it something pertinant, not really a problem, but pushy advertisement bothers me.

Dickiebo, You know we love you! :)

I'm from the dark ages and don't even know what you mean by an embedded link. Please someone enlighten me and I hope I haven't done it! Just what is an embedded link?

Callie said...

Midlife Mom, If you go to my Eight Belles post, you'll find and embedded link in I believe in the first comment. And you don't do that, silly! :)

I started blogging as a way to share my day to day with my friends in AZ(Mikey @ TheHorseShoeingHousewife was my farrier when I lived there). I am just not good at keeping up with emails or phone calls. This looked like a fun way to communicate.
I was surprised to find that this is something that tons of people do and have really enjoyed "getting to know" a lot of other wonderful people that blog to.
Thankfully, I haven't gotten any spam stuff yet, but I guess if that starts happening, I will have to enable the approval thingie.

Funny how this blog has changed how Megan and I view our life though. Things that we take for granted, now we are looking for interesting ways to incorporate into the blog.
It has definately been fun.

I do not think I have ever done that! I do not even know what a emebed link is! I started blogging to keep in touch with my sister who lives in GA. I never expected to meet so many wonderful people out in bloggerville! I have been blessed!

Being new to blogging myself, I am still trying to figure out all of the "etiquette." ;) I think people do different things, both in their comments and in their blog, because we are all unique individuals and expressing ourselves differently. If someone embedded a link back to their own post, I would probably guess (and hope) that they did not realize their user-name was clickable. I haven't seen many people do it yet. I have seen strange comments (not on my blog yet, but on others) that I was afraid to click on for fear it was a spammer...and I have heard people will try to spread viruses through the comments section? How would they do that? I hope I don't have to go to comment moderation at some point. If any of you old-timers have ever written a good post someplace in your archives about blogging etiquette or tips, can you let me know? I give you permission to embed a link to it in my comments section!! ;) Callie, thanks for bringing this up, it really helps us newbies!!

I love links so I guess I am the odd one out. It is a lazy way for me to go exploring.

Callie said...

Oldqueen44, I don't mind the links, but a generic comment and an embedded link bothers me.

I don't know if I do that or not. If I do I really don't do it with the intention of promoting my blog as much as letting you know who is commenting. Meaning if you have commented on my blog in the past and then I read on of your posts and comment I want you to know I was this Kelly not one of the million other kellys... Does that even make sense:)?

I don't really have a blogger account exactly so its just easier to put kelly@everyrider.com so you know who to respond to if you wish. If that isn't proper ettquitte I wasn't aware... so much to learn:(

Kelly, I don't mind that, it's the embedded link from the pro-writer attached to a generic comment. Wow, haven't heard from you in a while. Glad to see you're out and about!
