Strangles

This poor filly ended up with the worse case of strangles I ever saw, that lived. When she would nay it came out the holes in her face. Callie wanted to see pictures when she was really sick because she never saw a bad case. I couldn't bring myself to take them. I was weanie sitting this winter. She came in with 4 other ones that had just gotten over it. She came from a different farm then them. Evidently the breeder did not vaccinate her before sending her to the auction. It was a shame because she was the high selling weanling in a incentive fund catalog sale. She had gotten so down in weight that I could lift her. She is beautiful now. Hopefully the scars will go away in time. I'm going to use MTG on her. We started calling her Pusie or Pus Pus. I now it is awful, we did not think she was going to make it. You cannot give antibiotics or the infection goes to the organs and kills them, it has to run its course. I lost a gelding to bastard strangles, she had it too. The strain that went thru this area last year was the worst yet. My horses get vaccinated, the foals born here have an immunity that gets them thru the first 6 months to a year, part is from the mommas. After they get it, the recommendation that I have read is that you should not vaccinate for a year. We kept it in check, no other horse caught it from her. She still is draining from the one on the side of her stomach. I think it is more from having to heal from the inside out. The vet had to lance that one. She is our last reminder of the hard winter we had. I hope more people see this and vaccinate, it is a horrible sickness to deal with.

What a pretty face she has. A horse at my aunt's stable brought in strangles last year, so the rest of them had to be quarantined for a while. It's scary stuff!

That poor thing! I've never dealt with strangles, and I hope I never have to. It's got to be very painful for the animal. Gaaahhh. It just gives me the willies thinking about it

The poor little thing, she must be pretty tough to have pulled through.I hope I never see a case of this up close and personal. Glad she made it, she's very cute.

I think she deserves a battle name like Joan , for Joan of Arc, or something. :)

Man, I have not personally dealt with Strangles either, hope I never do. Man that looks painful. Poor girl, she does deserve a big old award for going through what she did! She is a pretty mare! The MTG stuff is wonderful, I have used it for a long time and highly recommend it.

I need to vaccinate for Strangles. I didn't because it was too close to foaling with Classy.

My former vet recommended NOT vaccinating for it. As much as we travel we NEED to have it done and will as soon as the say Emmett is up for it.

Thanks for the reminder.

I've never had to deal with strangles either and sure hope I never have to. I'm glad that this filly survived. She must have a big heart.

THat is so sad. I have always vaccinated for strangles until I moved to the south. A lot of vets don't do it here, they fear an outbreak? I don't get it? I worked at a summer camp where one horse got it. It's not fun. It's strange how so many vets don't do it anymore. We don't travel much and we don't bring in any new horses, but you never know!!

For the little amount of money paid out for the shot it is worth it. It is the step virus and people can get it in the form of strep throat. We nursed this filly for friends, they should be picking her up this weekend. She should grow up to be a heck of a horse because she does have a strong will.
