She came to us in early October of 2006. A little blind thing crawling between Stephen legs at our local hay farmer's barn, "Mew, mew, mew" . They seemed to get louder. I scooped her up and said, "Stephen, we can't leave her here." Bill, the farmer said, "Ya know, if you don't take her, she'll be dead by morning, her mother rejected her." Our heart strings tugged and I slipped her into my coat as we finished up and drove home. I spent the first 3 hours with her bundled in my arms trying to clear her crusted shut eyes with warm water compresses and then when I had finished discovered what I considered a bonus and shouted to Stephen, " Steve, come look, we have a bonus! She has extra toes and lots of them!" He had never seen that before. The next several week, I fed her warm milk with an eyedropper and we made several trips to the Vet for various meds to try and save her sight, which to no avail, did not work, so we accepted our blind little kitty and began to "baby" proof the house with gates and chicken wire and wooden barriers built to keep her from falling from one floor to another and it worked.
Over the few years we've had our little Liliput, who turned into a very large Liliput, she became accustomed to her surroundings. Clearly she knew where her food was kept, the litter pan and her safe hiding places. Because she was blind, she could be a little over sensitive and only gave out her kitty cuddles when she decided it was ok, generally when one of us was in the bathroom. 24 claws balancing on a bare lap, but purrs you couldn't resist.........
She had an acute turn of events for the worse over this past week and in an effort to force some meds down her, she bit my thumb, rather badly.........Of course, we initially had kitty vaccinated, however, since she was indoors strictly and anytime to try and get her into a cat carrier was like battling a bag of razor blades, we figured the risk of her getting rabies would be low as all of the other animals who routinely go outside or live outside are vaccinated up to date. Something had made her ill, congenital, her overweight issues, I do not know, but Liliput had to be euthanized regardless and sent to the state lab for rabies testing. It more than likely would have happened this week even without the bite as something started an acute illness........Trust me, this was not an easy decision nor was it at this point really ours entirely. I don't think even if we had her up to date as we have the others, she still would have been ill and this still would have happened. I'm glad we gave her 4 years that she wouldn't have had if I hadn't have tucked her into my coat and I am glad she gave us 4 years of uniqueness, her own very different personality and kitten kisses. Rest in Peace my always little Lilput...........We miss immensely...........And if I cry anymore, it probably still wouldn't be enough..............So sorry, Miss Put, so sorry little one. You will be missed so much......................

Oh Callie - I feel so bad for you We just went through our own version of the same thing. You did give her a wonderful four years, but I know that right now, it doesn't make it any easier. Sending a big hug to you.
Thanks, Victoria and thanks for your thoughts on FB as well.....It's been a rough few days. And I'm sorry for the loss of your kitty recently. I know some may not understand, and I've been just blubbering away now for days, but I do know your golden heart definately understands and I thank you so much for your kind words and thoughts.
Oh I am so sorry :C My friend has a blind kitty named Walter she saved from her work. He got steel dust in his system as a teeny kitty and it made him go blind and his liver/kidneys etc are compromised but he is the sweetest kitty ever.
Sorry to hear of your loss, I know it cant be easy. You have my kindest thoughts.
Sorry to hear this. You did give her more years than she would have had, and I am sure she knew that and was grateful. Take care of yourself
Oh damn girl. I'm so sorry! What a beautiful creature, and very special. I know your loss, and I'm feeling it. I literally just held my horse 20 minutes ago while she was put to sleep. She's laying in the yard waiting for pick up. Just seems like there's a lot of loss today. Hard on the heart... hugs to you both over there.
Thank-you Sydney, Cheyenne, Wolfie.......Mikey, girl, shit.....I am so sorry.......I dread that day, I only experienced that with a little filly I adopted, but shit that sucks........it sucks anytime......I too am sorry for your loss... :(
Callie and Stephen, so sorry for the loss of your little Liliput. She sounds like a unique little puss. I'm sure she loved her time with you guys and although it's hard you will have many happy memories to remember her by. Sorry again.
This must be the week for tragedies with our animals. My daughters 18 yr. old Aussie got run over by the vet and her leg was crushed.(Glenshee Equestrian blog) Victoria lost her cat...Hope this is it for bad news.
Thanks, Arlene for your thoughts and Holy Crap! What a way for us all to be starting the Holidays.......gads! I hope this ends soon, it's just too sad.
I'm so sorry Callie and Stephen =(
I'm so sorry. That is such a sad turn of events. But you're right you gave your little mitten-footed, blind sweetie-pie a good life and saved her life when she was just a ball of fluff.
Your story just reminded me that I need to get our cats rabies vaxed because we tend to let them lapse, too, since they never go outside. Thanks for the wake-up call.
By the way, when I went through a period of doing research on the famous Ernest Hemingway years ago, I discovered that he had a passion for polydactyl cats. He had a whole 'herd' of them at his Florida home and he even created a museum for folks to learn more about Mitten Cats.
(((((hugs)))))

Oh, I'm so sorry Callie (and Stephen)...That is so sad.
Unfortunately, you are probably correct that even if Liliput had been up to date on her vaccinations, but having unusual symptoms, the same outcome may have had to happen.
I found that out when working in a vet clinic. A dog that was UTD on his vaccinations had bitten a kid that trespassed on his property and even with proof of vaccinations, the HS required a 10 day observation. If he had not been UTD on his vaccinations, the victim and/or the HS could have requested immediate termination and testing of the animal.
I am just so sorry to hear that you ended up having to make that call simply because you were trying to help your beloved kitty.
Thanks all for all of your thoughts. It does help....... :)
I saw your fb posts about Miss Liliput. Once again, I'm so sorry. Cherish those special memories.
Sympathies and hugs from me too...
Thinking of you guys Callie. Call if you need to ;)
Liliput was a lucky kitty to have been found by you. Sorry to hear of your loss.
That is just so sad....i feel so bad for you. Those are such difficult decisions to make. but you gave that precious little life love and wonderful care for as long as you had her. i am sure she realizes that and loved you for it...my condolences.
