Horses & Watermelon...............

My horses LOVE watermelon.........Took these pics the other day when I gave the girls a juicy watermelon treat! Hilarious!

They love it! And slurp it!

Miss Mina being my lazy little partner.............

Got some shots of my Asiatic Lillies. One of the only things I can't seem to kill in my garden. Beautiful, I think.

In other news, Kola must have ended up with an abscess left from that heal crack this Spring. There was evidence of an old abscess yesterday when the girls were trimmed, only I didn't notice anything except that she was a bit tender on that foot last week when I picked them out. Jeremiah was here at exactly 6 weeks. It's all healed up now except for a skin flake at the back of her bulb on that right front. I'm putting aloe cream on it for now. She never even acted outwardly lame and when I went out there to feed the other day, wearing a purple towel around my head, they freaked out and she did a lot of high steppin' gaitin' . First time I've seen her do that since she had gained all that weight. She must be feeling a lot better now that her weight has dropped. Misty had her usual flare on one of her rears. I'm thinking combination of the vitamin rich Equibalancer feed and faster growing feet in summer.
Zoe's kitten has a name now and it is "Toulouse". Suits her well and she is a bit of a devil. A very sassy kitten. Only when Grandma comes in the room to visit, she's all sweet and purring! HA!
Our lawn has gotten completely out of control and I am overwhelmed by it. I really must get to it with the weed whacker. I actually had to use the tree trimmer to cut down the Burdocks next to my feed shed! Gosh! I hate weeds! We've all been suffering with sinus issues lately. I might try and get a little riding in tomorrow.
We have a lot on the agenda over the next couple of weeks. Must get our septic pumped and inspected for the county (new rule). I don't anticipate a problem, however, I have to whack all those damned weeds down, so that they can get to the lid.
I'm planning a contest in the near future with two clumps of prizes to give away. I think you'll like. I'll keep you all informed when it gets going! It'll be fun! Anyway that's it for the updates.

My farrier arrived the other day to put on a lost shoe and said he told his assistant as they pulled up, "This is what is looks like when nature takes over." Do you think I need to mow MY lawn???

Your horses are more spoiled than mine. I give them just the watermelon rind. Now, I guess I have to buy some extra just for them. I do give them sweet corn, though. Whever it's on sale, I buy lots for them, and some for me.

I had no idea horses would like watermelon. I'll have to try that sometime. How small do you cut it up for them? And really -- they can eat the rinds, too?

I am struggling with my own weedy lawn...have no time to work on it! At this point I think I need to enlist the help of a professional:-) I am going to get some watermelon...Maddy will love it!

You know I've never given them watermelon. But now that you mention it they might enjoy it, I'll give it a try.

You really have a lot to do in the coming weeks. I hate the weeds too. I just got some spray to kill the stuff growing up through the bricks on my patio and I'll start there. We have so much mowing to do. My daughter did two paddocks yesterday with the tractor and it took her hours. Glad she does a lot of the work, she's a big help.

Love your lilies it's one of the few things I can't kill either and the best part is they spread and come back every year without replanting.

Jean, Boy, I hear ya! My farrier had to whack the burrs to get into the paddock. I felt like an ass! LOL!

Katherine, Not to small, they'll work on it themselves, rhine and all. I quartered a cirlcle of an averaage sized melon.

Photochic, Something about the weeds this year all over, maybe it's just us all being busy!

Arlene, Mine Love it. I looked it up to make sure it's safe and it is. I actually have a short video of Kola slurping it. But it is way too short of a video, so next time, I'll video it , but longer and put it up. It's hilarious. I know I have to keep mowing my pasture for all the darned clover this year. Don't need "slobbers" again.

Nice blog!
Ever since I was little, I wanted to go to the U.S. and ride. And in a few years may acquire a ranch in the U.S..

My guys love watermelon too. I usually plant it in my garden but this year was just too cold too late in the season so I'll have to get it at the grocery store. I prefer just walking out, grabbing one, throwing it in the air so that is smashes and then watch them devour it! Rind and all! :o)

Jennifer, Thanks and good luck to you!

Midlife Mom, I grew watermelon once, but they didn't get very big,:(

I forgot all about feeding watermelon to the horse. We used to do that when we were kids. Hmmm...wonder if my horse will try it? I KNOW Megan's will...they eat anything she gives them-LOL.

My neighbors were just telling me how nice my yard looked last year and then they look at the mess it is this year...pointedly. I just told them I was "letting it go to seed";) I have mowed a couple of times this year, just haven't had the time to do the whole thing at once, so it looks a little raggedy.
But after the rattlesnake encounter last night, I got busy and started wacking weeds along the fenceline today and mowed the whole yard.

Your flowers are beautiful!!! Much more exotic than mine (impatiens and petunias). Hope your horse's hoof does not flare up again. It is interesting that they may like watermelon!!! John is allergic to watermelon, and in the summer sometimes people give it to us. I can't eat it all by myself, so now I know who to share it with!!!

I love your lilies! When it comes to abscesses, my life improved after Arlene and Jacquie introduced me to Animalintex. I buy the long rolls of it from Smart Pak Equine and cut them to fit inside those blue rubber medicine boots. I have two boots and put the warm water and Epsom salts in one, slip it on the horse's hoof and soak for 10-15 minutes. Then, I take that boot off and quickly slip on the other boot which has the moistened Animalintex poultice in it, making sure that the hoof doesn't touch the ground and get dirty. Then, I leave the boot on until I'm ready to do the whole drill again - usually when I feed in the am and the pm. That's it and man, has my life been easier since I figured that out! I'm so glad Kola is slimming down - how much weight do you think she's lost?
