Birds & Such..............

Captured this youngin' just prior to leaving the nest............... I love our barn swallows.

This fellow is a tough one to capture....... Look closely, it's like he's suspended in mid-air, well, in a sense he is..........
This is the first year, I've actually seen such a vivid male Ruby Throated Hummingbird and he is at that feeder non-stop!

Kola popped out to see what all the "buzz" was about..........

The results of our bird seed dropping from the feeder. I'm not complaining.........Every year, we get more and more sunflowers around the house.

An Honest Scrap.................

I have been tagged by Julian at White Horse Pilgrim to do an honest "Scrap". these are the rules.
• Recognize your award presenter and link back to their blog in your post. • List 10 honest things about yourself. • Present this award to 10 admirable bloggers who have moved you, and link to their blogs. • Notify recipients they have been awarded, so they can retrieve it.
1) This is tough and not for the reasons my good friend at Oh Horse Feathers listed, but for what haven't I revealed about myself already.........hmmmmmmm.......thinking here.
2) Well, I really have no filter. I tend not to mince words, often getting myself in trouble. Not to say that I don't use decorum when necessary, just that when it needs to be said, I'll often be the first one to say it. That means that I don't care who you are, what you do, what authority you have, but if you've done something wrong or pissed me off, I'll let you know, including telling a local policeman that pulled me over for going slightly over the speed limit that his penis was small. That cost me $250 and to me was well worth it. Also in a different incident in which I felt wronged over the settling of my Mother's estate, I told the attorney suing me and the mediator to "kiss my ass" as I stormed out of the courthouse. Just for a few examples.
3) I'm extremely passive-aggressive, oops. We all have our flaws, including farting on my chair at my computer prior to leaving the area when my daughter kicked me off to use it for her games. (hehehehe) embarrassing giggle there. Stephen, bless his most patient heart, must truly love me, cuz even he giggled at that one.
4) There are matters in which I am extremely anal retentive.........Diet coke, NO substitutes, period. Carlton Menthol cigarettes, NO substitutes ever!. The time in which it takes me to get ready for work, or anything really, but especially for work and I must arrive early to work ALWAYS. Including the way the bed must be made for the child I'm caring for, clean, decorations on baby blankets facing the correct direction and the way I take over an admission and direct the scene. All time saving and thorough, I assure you and the way the tell the Doctors that I'm putting in an order for whatever I feel needed in their name and it would be really nice if they sign it please. My co-workers are used to me and generally just step back and giggle or make comments to Aye, aye, captain, LOL!
5) My husband says I must include this one, He tells me and the world that Callie is the most loving, caring, and faithful friend, companion, & wife that any man could ever wish for. He just made me cry. Not to mention, he's the best!
6) I hate house cleaning, but love mowing the lawn, however that has suffered recently and when I finally do have the house clean, I don't let anyone sit anywhere or dirty it, LOL!
7) I absolutely LOVE shopping, but I'm unbearably miserable if I am forced to shop with others and don't have money to spend. I can be a real "Moo".
8) I hate to see even one grey hair dare to make an appearance on my head. So consequently, Stephen has learned the signs and intervenes with a quick trip to Regis for the full monty before I head off to Walmart to get the DYI crap and stand in front of the mirror with a pair of scissors, of which never quite turns out the way I had hoped when I try it myself.
9) I hate reading books, of any sort and often wonder how my daughter turned out to be such a book worm. PS. But I read any number of horse magazines.
10) If I have one nemesis in life, it's called the kitchen. Cooking or Cleaning. I've often thought my hell would be that at standing at a sink with a never ending pile of dishes I've been forced to wash & remember the "Beef Strognoff" ei: Hamburger Helper incident.....hehehehehe.
Well, this has turned out to quite revealing. Just checking that Stephen hasn't packed his bags! LMAO! Now to pass this on to some other unsuspecting souls out there.........
Ok, First I'll pass this on to John & Regina at Horse Talk Indiana who I have admired and gotten to know over this past year, a sweet couple! Next, onto JeniQ, at Super Size My Cob, one of my new followers. Next, Dusty at Copper Ponys Cowgirl. Next, Carol at Campin'HorseLuvR . And Liza at California Living.
And I think I'll break the rules and end it at there as most of us have had this opportunity!

Just a Swingin"

This is Callie's former dog, Jackson. He has recently started going in Stacy and Aimee's pen. I don't blame him entirely, I think Aimee likes to play with him. I would rather he just hang out on the swing and wait for me to get home. This is his favorite place to lay. Sometimes he really gets it moving. His mom used to do the same thing, it's funny how they end up being alike. To keep him out of trouble and Aimee from getting hurt he is now on a cable when I am not home. He can still lay on his swing set.

Stacy and Aimee

Stacy and Aimee were sleeping in this morning. This has been Stacy's favorite baby, she's mine too. They are sooo cute at this age. She will be the last one that I have trained for cutting.

An Explanation...............

In light of my last post and the reference to confidence, I feel I need to explain a little bit about the confidence issue. I have had my little redheaded mare now for about 7 years. I originally sold a little pony I had in order to make room for Misty. The idea was to get a safe little horse for my daughter, who was "sort of" interested at the time. Me, being me ran with it. Like a bull in a china closet. And in the end, Zoe wasn't really that interested. Jess & Gerald found Misty for me, and in the end is worth her weight in gold. She is an unpapered Morgan Quarter horse cross who came to me with an 11month old filly. That's a whole other story. Anyway, Misty is the horse I can explicitly trust with my life. Period. She has proven it over and over again. I have had her out on many a trail, up & down our fields, down to Jess's, trail riding in amongst cattle, she wasn't impressed with, but this little mare and I have created that bond. She has saved me & my step daughter from drunken men hiding out on a trail, spying and following us when we were unaware. This is the gem that she is. That is I why I think nothing of just hopping on her bareback with a halter and taking a spin around the yard or arena. I crawl under her, hug on her, raspberry her nose, put little kids on her, put complete novices on her, Stephen has ridden her and I know she would NEVER, not even in a spook, which she really doesn't do, hurt a soul, Never. The TRUST is most certainly there. Misty is the horse that everyone wants. And when I got Misty, I also had Dakota, the AQHA gelding, who was a clown. Now Dakota and I had our trials and tribulations. He had my number. As Jess put it, I do not do well with geldings. My fault, I allowed him to take advantage of me. He broke my hand, the first year I had him, he went to training and after that he actually was pretty good, but I needed to put time on him and I didn't do that nearly enough. In saying that, as much as he could be a dangerous ASS, he really didn't scare me. He would load in a trailer, but only if Misty was going to, never by himself, that was always a fight, no matter what I did, etc. , etc.. I did take him out on trails. Even trails shared by bicycles. He never dumped me. He reared on me once after I had sent him to a shitty trainer where he was supposed to be for 2 months and I pulled him out a month early because I felt that they weren't right and after that, his behavior was actually worse. What it came down too, was that he was too much horse for me, a lot of work that I didn't want to do, but in all of that, I was never afraid to get on him at home or take him with a friend on Misty to a trail. I would never consider taking him down the road. He simply was a lot of work and correction and I could not relax on the trail with him, although the horse loved it. I decided after all of it that he needed a better suited home and believe me that was a very difficult decision for me to make, but I wasn't afraid of him, just cautious and most times pissed off.
Now this is where Kola comes in. For a brief month, I had a 15.3 gelding that I bought at auction that I really thought was going to work for me, although I did look up at this horse and thought to myself, "What the hell was I thinkin'?". Our first trail ride together was 3 days after I had bought him and it was a long big trailride. 2 hours and over a 100 horses and mules. Spectacular! I had never done that before. Jess & Gerald took me, Thanks guys, cuz that memory will stick with me forever. Junior and I made it through this ride without a hitch, thanks to Gerald insisting I get my fat ass off him half way through and re-adjust the now slipped backed saddle (Jr. had really high withers). It was awesome, in spite of my sudden poor balance at the start of the ride. I now know this was the beginning of my MS issues, hind sight is always 20/20. We soared over a tiny little creek, he was afraid to cross and it felt great. I hadn't jumped since I was a kid. We made it down a paved road hill towards the end of the trail with a combine behind us and his anxiety as to where the other horses had disappeared in front of him was great indeed and I survived without a scratch. It was great. I later that week took him out on another trail, close to home, Stephen on Misty and even though he started to get shitty over saddling, we made it through that. It wasn't until I saddled him at home in the arena to ride, some new gear, a hand crafted breast collar, that it all went sour. I got on him and I have no idea what went wrong, Me, him, a bee sting, a bad mood, don't know to this day, but he started bucking and at 15.3 hands, this boy could really launch. I could not get control and after about 6-7 serious bucks, I went flyin' and landed on my side. Stephen said that I was about 11 feet in the air. I covered my head and all I could see were flyin' hooves, until he finally settled long enough for Stephen to remove him from the arena and put him in the paddock. I wasn't seriously injured, but very well could have been. I could not move, the pain was immense and I took a ride via ambulance to the hospital, got the scans, etc. and 8 hours later was released, off work for two weeks as I healed. The entire right side of my body was black, I mean black with bruising. At that point, I knew that I would never get on this horse again. And Steve now informs me that he would have never let me. So that brings me to Kola, I took some time searching for her over the summer. She had a history of a lesson horse, gaited and a mere 15.1 hands, sturdy. I looked at her twice, handled her feet, test rode where I bought her and brought her home. She trailered fine. She has always had impeccable ground manners. I bought her in September of 2006. There is nothing wrong with this horse. It has been my confidence, not her. She is a phenomenal mare. I have ridden her, but with Steve leading her. This last ride was my solo. There is no reason on earth why I should have feared getting on this horse to ride her, other than what happened to me before she came to live with me. I have spent the past three years getting to know her and letting her get to know me to start with that bond and we have a bond as well. I know it will grow, the more I ride her. She is fine, the only horse I have ever had that actually sees the bit coming and drops open her jaw to accept it, LOL! I have never had any logical reason to worry about his girl. It has always just been my own mind and now that I've ridden her solo, we can only go forward. Just thought that needed explaining. Thanks for listening.

Got 'Em Both Ridden Today.........

My usual bareback wit bridle this time on Miss Misty.........

And.....................

And.........My first solo on Kola since I bought her 3yrs ago and test rode at the place of purchase!

My confidence is returning................

Elated that it went so well! There are things I have to work on, however, seeing and feeling that I won't get killed by her and she was stellar, that is after she got used to my weight, will bring me to working on the control I need to regain. Anyway, it was a "Woot,Woot! " day!

Padro

I wanted to post a little update on my deaf dog. He is the one with the tail. The owner of the Stud dog came and picked him up Friday and took him to a rehabilitation rescue. He knew some people that could work with him and place him. He really is worth saving, I just did not have the time or experience to take care of him. I was working with him when I was home and he was catching on to hand signals and facial expressions. He should do well with an experienced trainer, which I'm not even close to. Jake picked him up while I was at work. I'm glad, I hate to cry in front of people. In that little time he was here I was pretty attached.

How Many Remember This

This is for July 16th 1969 40 years ago and I wonder how many of our fellow bloggers remember this special date in History or are willing to admit it ( Hehehe )

16th July ( 1969 ) Apollo 11 astronauts were launched into space on a Saturn 5 rocket launched from Cape Kennedy at 9:32 a.m. hoping to be the first men to land on the moon.
The crew consisted of
Neil Armstrong, Commander
Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin, Lunar Module Pilot
Michael Collins, Command Module Pilot
It's estimated more than a million people watched the launch at Cape Kennedy in Florida. Apollo 11 is scheduled to make it's moon landing in four days time on Sunday 20 July if all goes well.

Some dates in history live in world history , the date of the Apollo 11 launch and the subsequent landing of a man on the moon are one of those times when not only Americans but people in all countries around the world where radio or TV provided access for people to watch and listen to these moments in history that showed the reason why man has achieved and continues so achieve many great leaps forward in technology. I suspect most who are old enough and lucky enough to have lived on this historic week have vivid memories of this special period in our history. Steve

Health Care Part Two The US Healthcare System

Following on from first post about the good the bad and the ugly of the British National Health Service Here are my thoughts of how the current US system works or does not work according to your point of view ( if you did not read the first post please take the time to read it before thinking I am being disengenerous to the US system only ) In a similar way to my first post about the British NHS these are my perceptions not facts about the US Health Care System.

The US Health Care System

The US health care system is made up of two primary parts , Social Health care for those who are entitled to it and Private Health Insurance combined with Private funded and managed Health care Providers.

When reading the following it is important to note the following is an extremely important figure Health Care in the US is 16.8% of GDP ( compared with UK under 10% ) . or more simply for every hundred dollars earned $16,80 is for health careOnly 6 in 10 have private health care coverage, Lowering month by Month of those 1 in 4 work for the federal government or State Government meaning many of those in politics do not understand how the general population who are not government employees are affected with health care costs and lack of coverage.

Medicare
I must admit I do not have any personal knowledge of how well or how badly the current Medicare / Medicaid System works only what I have learned from reading and talking to those affected .

From my own perceptions the cost for Medicare and Medicaid is a tremendous burden on the US Taxpayer without providing the depth or levels of service provided by the British NHS , we have a friend who is well past retirement age 70 + who is forced to continue work as a Walmart Greeter primarily to pay for her health care costs which implies that even for those who have spent their lives working and paying taxes and Social security are not covered under the current system , we also have a friend whose wife needed a kidney transplant but because her husband still worked ( his employment, health care benefits and salary would not cover the costs and he was forced to stop working so at least his wife could go into the Social Health care system to start the long long wait for the operation. ). A story much closer to home was Zoes own dad who did not have any work and could not afford health care coverage and only went to a free clinic when the pain became unbearable. He was told he had an advanced form of Liver Cancer but due to paperwork and the time to go through the system would have to wait for Medicare approval , for anyone who has understanding of these type of Cancers , the sooner treatment is administered the more likely a positive outcome . Needless to say by the time the paperwork went through the system the advance of Cancer was beyond a clinical solution and he died very shortly afterwards.

I will not attempt to give The Good The Bad and The ugly for the current US social health care system because my lack of working knowledge does not provide me with enough knowledge to do so .

Private Health Care System

Callie covers our health insurance from her job as a nurse ( I did look into obtaining private health care insurance but the cost was prohibitive due to my age and health issues together with Callies MS and Diabetes) so we rely on Callies Health care for which she pays about $600,00 per month towards our cover.

Co-Pay
I believe our Co-Pay is in the region of 10% plus for all services so for example our Scripts between us cost in the region of $250.00 per month. Family practitioners visit Co-Pay $25.00. The cost for my broken ankle earlier in the year ended at about $3,000 Co-Pay towards a bill of about $45,000. Because of Callies MS and requirements for a MRI once or twice a year the Co-Pay cost is about $500.00 per year. Co-Pay costs do vary greatly on the insurance provider and coverage purchased so these are just examples.

I have not given these just to tell how much we pay more as an example of Co-Pay costs to those from other countries and to show even with insurance Co-Pay can be a significant chunk of change.

The Good
From my own perspective my treatment and Callies treatment are far far superior than we could expect in the UK, our Family practitioner is caring and takes the time to find out medical issues , she is also so nice I have never been great lover of Doctors or Hospitals I expect it's a bloke thing but trust her implicitly . She even took some time to pop into the hospital when I broke my ankle and check I was OK and say hello. Also When I broke my ankle the staff at the A and E were looking at and evaluating damage before we had even provided insurance details , the service from everyone involved Doctors, Nurses, Surgeon, Anesthetist, Aftercare and Heart consultant was professional, Caring , Understanding and I Believe could not have been better anywhere in the world and far far beyond what would happen in the British NHS.

1. You can choose Doctors and nurses that you wish to use ( especially good for us because of Callies knowledge of the Health care providers in the area. )

2. The overall service is caring, efficient and professional .

3. Medical facilities specifically the Hospitals I have seen are better staffed, funded and equipped than the UK.

The Bad

1. The costs are increasing exponentially for those with private health care as the numbers of uninsured increases and Insurance Companies, Drug Companies and Health Care Providers need to make the same profits

2. The cost of drugs which were first used from 5 years to 18 years ago continue to increase beyond any rational amount ( a good example is the highly prescribed Cholesterol tablet Lipitor where the Co-Pay has increased by nearly 30% in 12 months

3. The costs by differing health care providers differ significantly for the same treatment , just one example is an MRI, an important tool in diagnosis for many illnesses ( generally the same machine is used in most hospitals ) but can range from less than $500.00 to $4,000 depending on the location and provider.

4. Overall health care costs and Insurance has far outstripped any economic logic reasons are multiple

a. Higher Profit Taking By all involved

b. The Medicare decision to only pay pennies on the dollar for health care provision forcing the health care industry to increase prices by higher percentages meaning they would receive more from Medicare when they supply services , I can remember discussing this with a member of staff during my hospital stay and being quite shocked that attempting to save on medicare had forced the burden on those who are willing and able to pay for private health care.

5. Having spoken to a number of doctors and others in the health care profession one of the biggest bones of contention appears to be the high cost of Insurance to cover Lawsuits. ( the litigation mentality in America stuns me sometimes as most class action suits make more for the lawyers involved than those affected at the sharp end ) I am sure this also has some effect on the cost of prescription drugs.

6. I find it fascinating that most health care providers are registered charities often meaning they are not liable to state taxes or property taxes but those running these """" Charities """" are earning in excess of $1,000,000 per year , they are also massive advertisers on TV spending many millions to promote their company / Charity

The Downright Ugly

I am a strong advocate of free health care for all children regardless of race, status or money , how can any civilised society think that not ensuring a child can see the blackboard, Read correctly ( dyslexia ) or hear the teacher depends on parental ability to pay for health care, surely this only deepens the poverty trap by ensuring Public Education only works for those who can afford health care for their children.

I am sorry this post has been so long but many of
The Good The Bad and The Ugly I tried to highlight lead to my own views on what and how I would change the current US health care system and how to fund it.

Health Care The Big Issue Facing America Today

As many of you may know I am a Brit who is married to an American Girl, so have a better understanding of what A National Health Service is
and what it does , so for the next three posts I would like to take the opportunity to highlight The good, The Bad and The Ugly" from the health care between the two systems as I perceive them. The three posts are 1. British National Health Service, 2. US Health Care
and 3. Can America Change it's health care and My own ideas for change

The first post is about my perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of the British Health care System

The British Nation Health Service ( NHS ).

Following the end of World War 11 Under Clement Attlee the dream of From The Cradle To The grave socialism first put forward by
William Henry Beveridge was enacted when the Nationel Health Service Was Created on July 5 1948, which was designed to provide
following three main core principles

1. That it met the needs of everyone
2. That it be free at the point of delivery
3. That it be based on clinical need, not ability to pay

Current Taxation For the Cost Of Health care. It is not easy to define the percentage of tax paid for Heath care in the UK
as the Nation due to it's funding from National Insurance and taxes , But it is estimated at between 8 and 10% of GDP

The British National Health Service

Free at the point of service

No co-pay for
Doctors visits
Hospital Stays
Consultants
Preventive medicine ( Cancer screening, Heart Disease Screening etc. )

The wages of nurses are comparable to US rates , but Doctors salaries are less than US equivalents

Co-Pay

All scripts currently about $10.50 for those liable for payment whatever the cost of the drug

The Good
Health care is free at the point of service for all for Family Doctors, Hospitals etc.

Home visits are an accepted part of health care for the elderly and infirm plus visits to children late at night

Because of the stricter requirements for Drug testing and screening by the Government ( Government pays for drugs so much more resistant
to untried untested ) and drug companies find it more difficult to get unproven drugs to be accepted.

Because the NHS is a government run organisation the litigation mentality against health care professionals has not run riot as in other countries notably the US.

Due to it's large bargaining ability the NHS often pays less for the same drugs in the UK than the Joe Worker pays in his Co-Pay payments
without the additional costs to Insurance companies passed on to Insurance Premiums ( can be as low as 15% for the same drug in the US )

The cost of things like an MRI are standard countrywide and not open to abuse of free market forces

The Health trusts in the UK are mainly run at the top by health care professionals not those more suited to big business with MBA's and degrees in Accountancy and Law

The Bad
Because of the perception of free many health care professionals are complacent and forget that the customer is still paying through taxes

Because the service is free many abuse the system by tying up valuable health care professionals with needless appointments and
using health care as a way to combat loneliness

Because of the constant battle between funding ( taxes ) and needs ( whether genuine or Unnecessary ) the waiting time for those
in genuine need is between 5 and 10 times longer than those who have health care Insurance in the US. This applies to
all sectors from Family Doctors Visits to Hospital Surgery, plus the time allocation for a doctors visit is much much less in the UK.

The Downright UGLY

The place where the NHS falls down more than any other area is because of Underfunding, Overworked Staff and the constant battle between
funding and need, the service is always at breaking point in terms of service, quality.

These are only my own perceptions and many will violently disagree

Sorry about the Non Horsey Post but I thought many might be interested in views by someone who has seen the best and worst of both health care services

Here I go again!

I feel that I am a responsible breeder. I have not breed a lot of dogs, I mainly did it when people I knew wanted a pup. Another one on the dogs that I sold last fall has come back to me. I love Jackson and he is not going anywhere. Max and Jackson get along very well. Padro came back to me because he tried to bite the owner and another family member. Knowing the dogs background I figured there must be a reason. I figured it out the first night. He is DEAF, I'm not sure how long he has been like this. He is too smart and behaves basically like a hearing dog. He was recently neutered, could that cause it? The biting just started. If you startle him he gets defensive. I am careful how I approach him from behind or how I wake him up. He is confused at not being able to hear. He is not sure if the other dogs are barking to play or to fight. I have him responding to hand signals already. I have 2 heelers now and cannot keep him. I took him to find him a home that he fits into. Now it will be more difficult. He is so sweet and smart, I cannot think of putting him down. If anyone can help him out, please contact me.

Horses & Watermelon...............

My horses LOVE watermelon.........Took these pics the other day when I gave the girls a juicy watermelon treat! Hilarious!

They love it! And slurp it!

Miss Mina being my lazy little partner.............

Got some shots of my Asiatic Lillies. One of the only things I can't seem to kill in my garden. Beautiful, I think.

In other news, Kola must have ended up with an abscess left from that heal crack this Spring. There was evidence of an old abscess yesterday when the girls were trimmed, only I didn't notice anything except that she was a bit tender on that foot last week when I picked them out. Jeremiah was here at exactly 6 weeks. It's all healed up now except for a skin flake at the back of her bulb on that right front. I'm putting aloe cream on it for now. She never even acted outwardly lame and when I went out there to feed the other day, wearing a purple towel around my head, they freaked out and she did a lot of high steppin' gaitin' . First time I've seen her do that since she had gained all that weight. She must be feeling a lot better now that her weight has dropped. Misty had her usual flare on one of her rears. I'm thinking combination of the vitamin rich Equibalancer feed and faster growing feet in summer.
Zoe's kitten has a name now and it is "Toulouse". Suits her well and she is a bit of a devil. A very sassy kitten. Only when Grandma comes in the room to visit, she's all sweet and purring! HA!
Our lawn has gotten completely out of control and I am overwhelmed by it. I really must get to it with the weed whacker. I actually had to use the tree trimmer to cut down the Burdocks next to my feed shed! Gosh! I hate weeds! We've all been suffering with sinus issues lately. I might try and get a little riding in tomorrow.
We have a lot on the agenda over the next couple of weeks. Must get our septic pumped and inspected for the county (new rule). I don't anticipate a problem, however, I have to whack all those damned weeds down, so that they can get to the lid.
I'm planning a contest in the near future with two clumps of prizes to give away. I think you'll like. I'll keep you all informed when it gets going! It'll be fun! Anyway that's it for the updates.

Happy 4th of July!

Wishing all of you a very Happy Independence Day! Remember our troops and the freedom we have that they are fighting for! Have a great 4th of July y'all!
