Quick Update on Sky

Joe is a good horse Daddy and had the Vet out yesterday......... She is malnourished from too high of a fat content. He had been feeding two gallon containers of grain and corn oil with weight builder and a half bale of hay a day. He has been given a list of supplements and fresh veggies and fruits to give her and will drop down on the grain and up the hay. Her teeth will be floated next week and the Vet will see her again in three weeks after new diet. He will send me pics again to track her progress.

Good to hear she's been seen by the vet. Hope she's feeling much better soon.

Good grass hay is always a good alternative to any grain program, especially if you don't know what you are doing. Plus there are so many good products out there now you don't have to guess at adding corn oil or weight builder or beet pulp. A good vet check, some tooth work and lots of grass hay should make a big improvement soon. I have rescued plenty of horses and this regiment always works. Hope things turn around for Joe and his lady soon.

Ah, so there is such a thing as trying too hard to pack on the weight. :o) Good to know.

Great to hear that Sky's condition is nothing too serious at this point. I hope she feels better soon!

It's great to hear that the owner is trying too hard!

I over-supplemented my first dog, made him pretty sick:(

Kudos to Joe!

Way to go Joe! Glad to hear it wasn't something more serious. And that it was an issue of "trying to hard" as opposed to "not trying enough" - that is refreshing!

good for him getting the vet out so fast. glad to hear the vet thought it was fixable. i've never had skinny horses - quite the opposite! all mine are easy keepers. but i'm not a fan of feeding fat, even for espm horses, as it tends to block nutrients and induce insulin resistance. and i'd always err on the side of too much hay, too little grain than the other way around... as it is now, i only use a tiny bit of grain or beet pulp so they eat their supplements - otherwise they pretty much live off grass hay and pasture.

hope she's back in top shape soon! post some before and after pics if you can when she's doing better :-)

Great news if that's what the problem was. The nice thing is that it's a relatively easy fix and Joe will, I am totally positive, follow through to absolute perfection. Hope we see some updated and much better pictures of his girl in a few weeks or so.

This is really good news -- when I saw the post my first thought was teeth floating was needed, along with checking her out for other things. Once he gets her on a different diet, hopefully she will spring back. Sort of wild how what sounds like a good feeding regime can actually cause problems....

Sounds like the vet upped her fiber. We don't really think about fiber when feeding horses but if there's not enough it can really reek havoc on a horse. Too much fat and not enough fiber gets even more complicated.

Good for Joe seeking out help.
