Woke To 6 Inches Of New Snow!

This is the state of some of the critters today. Misty, pictured in red, is now fully pissed off at me. When I called them in to eat this morning, she was shivering. She always shivers in the winter. So I de-icicled them and threw a blanket on Misty after chasing her down in the pasture, and she is now pissed at me. Kola wasn't shivering, so I did not blanket her yet, but probably will later today. I also, after observing them trip up in the snowy pasture, decided that this was it, I'm closing it down, which also upset Misty and this is the state of the girls this morning, totally ignoring their hay. Spot, also on my "s---" list is pictured here after attacking the snow shovel after every time I tried to throw the snow. Now I'm pissed at them. Spend 40 minutes out there in the cold trying to sort the snow, horses, and goats.

Wow, that's a lot of snow.I can't believe she wasn't grateful for a blanket. Mine are always happy to have one when they are cold.

I ended up blanketing Kola that afternoon and it was a good thing too. It got down to "0" last night.

I think we got that storm.

Now that looks cold!

I'm counting my blessings as I go tromping through the mud, but ... no snow.

We're new to snow, so I'd love it if you can give me some advice. I've got two former California princesses - Quarter Horses, a mother and daughter - who don't like staying in the barn and corral all day. We got the same snow/ice storm here in New England. I turned the girls out today for a short while in the pasture. Held my breath, no problems this time. They are getting their front shoes with borium cleats tomorrow. I hope you'll check out my blog, "Teachings of the Horse" at victoriacummings.blogspot.com. And please, if you have more thoughts on ice and snow, I hope you'll share them! Thanks.

Hi Victoria. thanks for visiting.I don't have a barn at all. I have a large loafing shed that I can easily convert into two box stalls , however I don't because neither of my mares will stand in a stall. I do have the floor of it clean and rubber matted. I kkep my girls out of the pasture but they have the paddock area and the training pen adjacent to the paddock. They have enough room to roll, stretch, trot a little and stay out of each others way. I keep my horses barefoot year round. Don't need shoes. They're heavy enough to crush down snow and ice.We had that same storm last week. Once the weather hits below 20 degrees F. I'll pop on their blankets.
